I watched this movie not because it was directed by Ang Lee (directors do not make a difference to me), but because of its homosexual element. Yes, I was curious what level of homosexual scenes were allowed to be screened.
This movie is based on a short story written by Annie Proulx. In an interview, she said that this is a purely fictional story and not connected to anyone she knows in real life. BUT WE NEVER KNOW. Most authors write based on own experience or 2nd, 3rd or 4th hand experience. And then they claim of writing based on pure imagination.
This is a story of two individuals whose paths crossed one summer and forged a life-long love relationship that shouldn't have happened, and God only knows why it did, since homosexuality is supposed to be against the course of nature.
Bearing in mind the setting of 1963 in rural America, I have to keep telling myself, "OK, this homosexual relationship IS a BIG deal."
But I don't understand one thing, why was it that both Jack and Ennis got married and even have kids when they already know at 19 years old, that they are homosexuals? Or were they actually bisexuals?
I know that homosexuals can procreate, but what about the emotional tangle? Why go and destroy other people's life, i.e. the wives and children?
Although society will not accept a male-male relationship, did they need to get into conventional married life just to keep up pretenses? This is what that made it harder for them as it already was with that kind of community. If they remained single, they could also just as well go to Brokeback Mountain three times a year, couldn't they?
OK, so one could see that Jack married for money. What about Ennis? A childhood promise?
In the end, Jack died, there were flash back scenes of him being beaten up. He must have died from that beating, and NOT from an accident as related by his wife to Ennis. They must have found out his secret.
Well, I don't know how anyone can hide that, especially for 20 long years. And it seems that it takes a homosexual to spot another even in a crowded room.
Overall, an enjoyable and thought-provoking movie, but be prepared to get used to the Southern accent. Otherwise, a lot of dialogue will be lost.
